DRUM BRAKES
- Heat created by braking, in combination with stretching and constant
compression, causes these parts to lose their correct tension.
Weak springs cannot return the brake shoes completely and weak
hold down parts permit the shoes to bind and rattle, all resulting
in premature wear.
- Adjusting parts are also subjected to heat and stress, as well as
normal wear and should also be replaced. Stressed or stretched
springs and cables, worn levers, and rusted or worn adjusting
screws will prevent the brakes from adjusting. Lack of adjusting
will affect brake performance and could cause total loss of rear
brakes.
